Raspberry Pi
Raspberry Pi is a family of small computers made by Raspberry Pi Holdings plc, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Most members are complete Linux computers on a single board: plug in a screen, keyboard and microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS and you get a desktop and Python. They also have a row of pins (GPIO) for switching LEDs and reading digital sensors from Python with the GPIO Zero library. The family also includes the Pico boards, which are microcontrollers instead: they do not run Linux, and a program is flashed to on-board memory, closer to an Arduino. A Linux Raspberry Pi cannot read analog voltages on its own, so many projects add a converter chip or a microcontroller such as a Pico. This page explains the family; individual boards have their own records.

How it works Evidence: Documented
A classic Raspberry Pi is a whole computer on one board. It starts from a microSD card that holds the operating system (usually Raspberry Pi OS, made with the Raspberry Pi Imager tool). Once it boots you can use it like a desktop PC, or reach it over the network. The 40-pin header lets Python programs turn pins on and off and read digital sensors. A Pico is different: you copy one program onto it and it runs that program by itself, with no operating system and no desktop.
More detail (advanced)
Linux models run a Debian-based OS (Raspberry Pi OS) on Arm Cortex-A cores; GPIO, I2C, SPI and UART are exposed on the 40-pin header at 3.3 V logic and driven from user space (for example the GPIO Zero library). Because Linux is not a real-time OS and the header has no ADC, timing-critical or analog work is usually offloaded to an external ADC (e.g. ADS1115 over I2C) or to a microcontroller such as a Pico. Compute Modules carry the same core hardware without connectors, for embedding on a custom carrier board. Pico boards use RP2040/RP2350 microcontrollers programmed with the C/C++ SDK or MicroPython and flashed to on-board memory.
